Breaking: Former Everton Player Sentenced to Life in Prison for Corruption in China

Former Everton Player Li Tie Sentenced to Life in Prison

Li Tie, a former Everton player, has been handed a life sentence in prison for involvement in corruption activities in his native country, China. The shocking development unfolded during a televised confession aired on Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, where Li admitted to paying approximately £330,000 to secure the position of managing the national football team. Additionally, he confessed to being implicated in a match-fixing scandal aimed at securing promotions with various club teams he represented in China.

The Chinese public prosecutor has identified Li as "suspected of accepting and offering bribes," leading to his sentencing.

This verdict comes in the wake of Li's departure from his role as the manager of the Chinese national team. The 46-year-old had led the team from 2019 to 2021.

Li Tie's football career spans across different clubs, including a notable stint at Everton, where he made 40 appearances across various competitions during his four-year tenure from 2002 to 2006. He also had a brief spell at Sheffield United earlier in his career.
